Although the book is a work of fiction, Shaara is very accurate in his depictions and characterizations. Author Michael Shaara does an excellent job of showing the bravery and valor of the men fighting on both sides. This action was accurately reflected within the characters, who I found believable, likeable, and, even, dislikeable. The book illustrates the horrors of brother fighting brother, friend fighting friend, and the brutality of this devastating war that left 50, Americans dead. Lee and Commander James Longstreet as the battle continues on. I truly connected with General Robert E. However, this book was not my cup of tea or something I would read of my own accord. He was an author of science fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction. When the fighting began, Shaara illustrated the deeper aspects of war and soldier life by illuminating the readers on the personal lives of the otherwise hardhearted men. Or at least it would have been seriously delayed.

Shaara included the arguments between characters about how to go about the attack, which gives the reader much more details about how complicated the few days of the battle were. Prohibiting slavery in the states that did not yet become states triggered the start of the Civil War.
